Clinical Research

Our Practice supports NHS research

Minden Family Practices is proud to announce that we are now working with the research arm of the NHS, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), to promote clinical research and offer our patients the opportunity to take part in ethically approved research studies.

Research has always been at the heart of the NHS. Through research we are able to continually improve treatments and discover the best ways to prevent, diagnose and manage illnesses. It also helps us understand how to best focus NHS resources where they will be most effective.

As a patient, you may at times be offered the opportunity to be involved in research studies which our Practice has agreed to support. Our Practice's level of involvement may range from simply having identified a suitable group of people from our database for an external researcher, to be a site where research activity is carried out.

We are currently undertaking the following studies:

  • AF-GEN Study - small scale study looking at patients diagnosed with AF in the last 12 months and reviewing their management
  • Orion 4, 8 & 11 - Global study for a new lipid-lowering medication for patients with high cardiovascular risk

Studies we have completed:

  • Diabetic study
  • COPD study
  • A study to examine rare genetic variations associated with thinness
  • Electronic health data and health interventions study
  • Vaccination study
  • Questionnaire-based study on the effect of a personal letter on cancer awareness

We routinely have new research opportunities for a variety of health conditions, please speak to your doctor of nurse if you'd like to take part in one of the above studies.

We are a "FARSITE" enabled Practice

Minden Family Practices are signed up to FARSITE which provides a safe, convenient and effective way for your family GP to control the recruitment of patients into clinical research, whilst allowing NHS-based researchers to run complex and powerful searches over anonymised population level health record data.
